This is an exceptionally well made gun that is typical of an English gentleman's
mid grade hunting rifle. These are some of my favorite guns as they have an
understated beauty to them as well as a weight and balance that make them a joy
to shoot. This one was made by Jurgen Kreckel who is also known for his fine
wheel lock and match lock guns.
The stock is an beautiful piece of English walnut with has raised carving around
the tang, a checkered and stamped wrist and a horn nosecap. There is also a
border carving running along the forend next to the barrel. The barrel is 31"
long with a swamped profile in .54 caliber. It has a hook breech but no wedges,
just 3 pins. I haven't pulled the barrel to look
for a maker's mark but it appears to be a Colerain. The lock is a Chamber's
round faced English style and the mounts are steel. The engraving is extremely
well done and is typical of this style of rifle. The buttplate has been
personalized for a previous owner with an engraved Rhodes family coat of
The rifle is lightly used and is in like new condition.
Overall a nice rifle that holds and points very well. Should be a good shooter.
This is an exceptionally fine gun for the price.
Weight is 7 lbs. 6 ozs. Pull is 14".
