This is a nice, very plain Mountain style rifle. These rifles were made in the
mountains of western Virginia, eastern Kentucky and east Tennessee using the
least number of parts as they were intended to bring home meat or protect the
farm at the lowest cost possible. This one has antler pieces to protect the tips
of the butt and also under the lock bolts to protect the wood.
I don't know who made it.
It is stocked in plain maple stained to a light brown. There are bone or antler
pieces on the tips of the butt as well as the lock bolt washers. The lock is a
L&R flintlock. It originally had a cheap Spanish CVA lock but the current owner
replaced it with the current lock which greatly improved the performance. The barrel is
a straight 41" long,
13/16" across the flats in .36 caliber.
I haven't pulled it to check the maker but might be a Douglas barrel. There is a touch hole liner. The bore is
very good. The
North Star double triggers need to be set before cocking and firing. The gun is mounted
with steel thimbles and guard.
It currently has a brown fiberglass ramrod. There are some small gaps around the
front of the lock and a chip behind the tang has been glued back. Overall a nice,
and according to the owner, an accurate rifle.
Weight is 7 lbs. 5 oz. Pull is 14½".
