Hawken Style Rifle

36¾" Douglas Barrel in .54 caliber

This is a J. & S. Hawken style rifle made many years ago and appears unfired.

This rifle is stocked in a piece of walnut that that is stained to a nice medium brown and has a poured pewter nosecap. The barrel is a straight 1" by 36¾" long G. R. Douglas in .54 caliber. These barrels are known for being very accurate. There is a hook breech and two key wedges. The bore is dusty but excellent condition. The lock is marked WM on the inside and has nice cast-in engraving. It's not the highest quality but it works fine. The double triggers are by Cherry Valley which I believe was bought up by L&R. I have worked over the triggers and lock so they function as best as they can. The triggers will fire set or unset. The barrel and steel parts have a deep brown color. Inlets are tight and well done. Holds and balances very nicely. The workmanship is well done but the styling has some problems. The forend is about 6" too long. Easy to fix by cutting it back to just behind the forward  wedge and pouring a new nosecap. I would relocate the existing forward wedge to about 5" behind the other to retain the two wedges as would be correct for most Hawken rifles. This would also require a new longer barrel rib and soldering the ramrod pipes to the new rib and browning all of that to match the barrel. Another option is to have the barrel cut down 4½" at the breech and the plug reinstalled which would eliminate the need to mess with the rib. ( I know a good barrel maker that could do this for you.) Cut the forend back the same 4½" and pour a new nosecap then install the front wedge to the rear. This option would make the barrel about 32" long, lighten the overall weight and improve the handling.

The forend is also very square. A result of the maker looking at pictures and not handling many guns. By rounding down the forend, weight would be removed and it would have a better look and feel.

As it is, the gun would be a great hunting rifle but by fixing the mentioned flaws, it would be an even better looking rifle. This would be a great winter project for someone!

Weight is 10 lbs.   Pull is 13½".
