West Virginia Percussion Rifle

44" Douglas Barrel in .45 caliber

This is a style of rifle made in the mid 19th century that would be typical of West Virginia up through western Pennsylvania. The style is good but it needs a little TLC.

This rifle is stocked in a nice piece of curly maple with a bit of a deep drop to the butt. There is some incised carving on the cheek side that is pretty well done. There is a check in the wood on the cheek which can be seen in the pictures. Not a serious concern as it looks old and does not go to the other side. It could be hidden with a Minwax furniture dent filler stick available at the hardware store. There is also a repair to the tip of the toe which seems solid. Whatever caused the break to the toe bent the buttplate slightly and caused the bottom of the patchbox to get out of alignment. A little work would be needed to take care of that but it is repairable. The barrel was made by G. R. Douglas and is a straight 13/16" across the flats, 44" long in .45 caliber. There is a touch hole liner. The bore is very good. The lock is a large Siler percussion style but you could convert it to flint easily. The double set triggers must be set to fire. Inlets are tight and well done. At the price, a good project for someone.

Weight is 8 lbs. 14 oz.    Pull is 13¾".
