This is a nice example of of a Tennessee style rifle. It was made by Don Greene
of Staunton, VA. This is one of his early guns probably from the late 1970s or
early 1980s as it has his name in block instead of the later guns he signed in
script. Don passed away in 2015.
This rifle is stocked in a piece of
maple with iron hardware that has a nice patina. The patchbox is a commercial
one that Don reshaped. The barrel is
a straight ⅞" across the flats, 42" long in
.50 caliber. Not sure if this is a commercial barrel or one of Don's as he did
like to rifle his own from Green Mountain blanks. As it has radius rifling, my
guess is he rifled it. It has a browned finish. There is a touch hole liner. The bore
is very good. The lock is a large Siler.
The double set triggers must be set for the lock to fire.
Inlets are tight and well done. There are a few checks at the rear of the tang
from recoil but they appear old and the barrel is seated well now and the checks
will probably not change in time. Overall a very nice and well styled rifle. Holds
and balances very nicely.
Weight is 8 lbs. Pull is 14".
