This is a nice Lehigh Valley style longrifle. I'm not sure who made it or
how long ago but it is a well proportioned gun with good workmanship in the fit
and finish.
This rifle is stocked in a piece of
very nice curly maple that that is stained to a nice medium brown. The finish is
a bit thin were solvents have washed down the stock when cleaning. A refinish of
the wood would really bring out the curl even better. The hardware is
brass and has a natural patina. The patchbox is a pry open style with solvent
discoloring on the lid. A polishing would make it look better. The barrel
appears to be a Douglas, 42" long by 13/16" in
.36 caliber. The bore is in very good condition. The sights are fairly tall for
my taste but the help to see better with the heat waves which come off the
barrel with match shooting. They could be easily be cut down if desired. The lock is a Chamber's
small Siler style percussion which could be converted to flintlock with the
purchase of a new lock and touch hole liner.
The steel parts have an aged brown color. Overall it is in excellent condition
and does not look like it has been fired very much. Inlets are tight and well done. Holds
and balances very nicely.
Weight is 8 lbs. 2 oz. Pull is 14".
